01 / A fresh start

Setting up
for the first time?

For Echo speakers that use app-based setup, start with these four steps. Keep the device’s model name and your Wi-Fi details handy.

Amazon’s Echo speaker setup guide
  1. 01

    Power on your Echo speaker

Use its supplied adapter, connect it to power, and let it start up.

  2. 02

    Open the Amazon Alexa app

Install or update the app from your phone’s app store. Sign in to the Amazon account you want to use.

  3. 03

    Add your device

Choose Devices → + → Add Device → Amazon Echo, then select the matching speaker type.

  4. 04

    Follow the setup prompts

Choose your Wi-Fi network and finish the instructions in the app. Setup controls vary by model.

What’s happening
with your speaker?

Open the issue that matches what you’re seeing. Work through the steps in order and try the device again after each change.

Alexa app labels can vary by version and region. Device features and setup controls also vary by model.

My speaker won’t connect to Wi-FiOffline, dropping out, or missing the network
  1. Check the connection first. Test the same Wi-Fi with another device. If that also fails, troubleshoot your internet connection or router.
  2. Improve the signal. Move the speaker closer to the router and away from interference, such as microwaves or baby monitors.
  3. Recheck the network details. Confirm the Wi-Fi name and password. If either changed, update the speaker’s Wi-Fi settings.
  4. Restart your Echo. Unplug it from power for 30 seconds, then reconnect it and wait for it to start.
For an Echo speaker, open its device settings in the Alexa app and look for the Wi-Fi change option. For an Echo device with a screen, change Wi-Fi on the device itself.

Alexa doesn’t answer meNo response to the wake word or voice request
  1. Check the microphone. On Echo speakers, a solid red light usually means the microphone is off. Use the microphone button to turn it back on.
  2. Reduce background noise. Move the device away from loud speakers, walls, and other noise sources, then try your request again.
  3. Check power and internet. Use the supplied adapter and confirm that your home connection is working.
  4. Restart if needed. Unplug your Echo, wait 30 seconds, reconnect it, and try again after it starts.
Buttons and mute indicators differ on third-party Alexa-enabled devices. Check the manufacturer’s guide for your model.
Amazon: Alexa isn’t responding
Setup won’t finishThe app can’t find or register the speaker
  1. Update the Alexa app. If your device uses app-based setup, use the current version and confirm your phone has internet access.
  2. Choose the right model. Add the matching Echo type and follow its instructions for setup mode. Button combinations vary.
  3. Restart the Echo. Disconnect power for 30 seconds, reconnect it, and try the setup flow again.
  4. Use the model’s own guide. Echo devices with screens and third-party speakers may use a different setup process.
If registration fails, check the account prompt or exact error message in the official app or on the device before trying a factory reset.

Sound or Bluetooth isn’t workingLow volume, silent playback, or pairing problems
  1. Start with volume. Increase the device’s volume and check whether it responds to a basic voice request.
  2. For Bluetooth, check the accessory. Keep it charged, close to your Echo, and in its pairing mode. Move both away from interference.
  3. Pair again. If a saved Bluetooth pairing keeps failing, remove that pairing in the Alexa app and create it again.
  4. Separate streaming from pairing. If Alexa answers but music fails, check your music service and internet connection rather than assuming the speaker is muted.
For supported Echo speakers: Alexa app → Devices → your Echo → Device Settings → Bluetooth Devices → Pair A New Device.

A smart-home device won’t respondA light, plug, or other accessory isn’t connecting
  1. Check the accessory’s power. Make sure the light, plug, or other device is switched on and connected as its manufacturer requires.
  2. Try the manufacturer’s app. For non-Matter third-party Wi-Fi devices, finish setup there before linking the device to Alexa.
  3. Compare the results. If it works in the manufacturer’s app but not Alexa, check the account link or reactivate the relevant Alexa skill.
  4. Check its own connection. If it fails in both apps, troubleshoot the accessory’s network or setup using its manufacturer’s instructions.
Compatibility, Wi-Fi bands, hubs, and pairing steps depend on the accessory. Check the exact model’s requirements.

What is that light
telling you?

Common Echo speaker light patterns can point you toward the next check. The color and its movement both matter.

Orange

Setup mode, or the device is trying to connect to the internet.

Solid red

On Echo speakers, the microphone is off. Use the microphone button to enable it.

Cyan on blue

Alexa is listening. A brief glimmer can mean it is processing a request.

Yellow

A message, notification, or missed reminder. Ask Alexa about your notifications.

Green

Pulsing: an incoming call. Spinning: an active call or Drop In.

Purple

After a request: Do Not Disturb. During initial setup: a possible Wi-Fi issue.

This guide covers common Echo speaker indicators. Echo devices with screens and third-party speakers may use different light patterns.

A little more clarity

A few common
setup questions.

Do I need to use 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi?

Many Echo devices support both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz home Wi-Fi. Follow your model’s requirements. Some smart-home accessories support only 2.4 GHz, so check the accessory separately.

Can I follow these steps for any Alexa speaker?

The basic power and connection checks are useful starting points. Setup menus, mute controls, supported features, and reset methods vary. For a third-party Alexa-enabled speaker, use its manufacturer’s instructions.

My router or Wi-Fi password changed. What next?

Reconnect the speaker using the new network details. For Echo speakers, use the Alexa app’s device Wi-Fi settings. For Echo devices with screens, use the network settings on the device.
